The total number of bankruptcy filings increased by 10.6% in the twelve-month period ending September 30, 2025, according to statistics from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. Total filings rose to 557,376 cases from 504,112 the prior year, with non-business bankruptcies increasing 10.8% and business filings increasing 5.6% during the same period. The Judiciary reported that total filings have increased each quarter since reaching a decade-low of 380,634 in June 2022. It is worth noting, however, that current volumes remain far below the nearly 1.6 million filings recorded in September 2010. Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 filings accounted for most cases in 2025, with 344,825 Chapter 7 filings and 203,118 Chapter 13 filings reported.
Despite the recent increase in volumes, Friedman Vartolo’s bankruptcy team continues to deliver consistent, client-focused results across its portfolios. Our team maintained strong performance metrics during this period, including: obtaining an E.D.N.Y. District Court ruling in August confirming the inapplicability of the automatic stay on a second filing when the first bankruptcy is still active, and having attorneys speak at several prominent bar association events. We have continued to meet or exceed client expectations for responsiveness and case resolution timelines. As filing volumes increase into 2026, our team remains positioned to provide efficient, accurate, and scalable bankruptcy support grounded in ongoing process refinement.
